Maintain a Healthy Diet at Any Age

Regardless of your age it is important to have a nutrient-rich diet in order to stay as healthy as possible.  Even for people in their 70s, 80s and 90s, eating well can make a difference in how they feel; but unfortunately, many seniors do not always know what constitutes a healthy diet.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) provides some helpful tips for older adults to follow to ensure they eat well.  One of the first things they say is to make sure to stay hydrated because as we age, we lose some of our sense of thirst.  They recommend drinking plenty of water and avoiding beverages with lots of added sugars.

Seniors’ diets should include fruits and vegetables in a variety of different colors, lentils and beans, nuts and seeds, whole grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy, and lean protein.  While vegetables and fruits are a good source of fiber, full of vitamins, and low-calorie, they can be difficult to chew for some elderly people with dental problems.  If that is a problem, substitute softer foods including canned fruits and meats such as tuna.  Also adding herbs or spices to food is a good way to enhance flavor.

At MorningStar of Sparks, we are committed to provide the best senior living Reno or Sparks offers, and we take our residents wellbeing seriously, including their diet.  Our residents are treated to three daily meals prepared largely from scratch using the freshest produce by our Executive Chef.  We also incorporate BrainWise foods into our meals such as nuts, berries, dark leafy vegetables, and dark chocolate. In addition we recognize that mealtime is more enjoyable in a social setting, which is why our meals are served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room.  Recipes are modified to accommodate changing needs and diets including low-sodium, sugar-free, vegetarian, and low-fat choices.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Sparks, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to learn more about the finest senior living Reno/Sparks has to offer.

The Advantages of Senior Living

Now that senior living communities have changed dramatically from the past, more and more seniors are discovering the many advantages to senior living.  Whether you are a senior who requires a little extra care or an active one who desires a more carefree lifestyle, senior living communities are becoming more and more appealing.

Today’s independent living and assisted living communities offer comfortable, carefree retirement years and are designed to meet aging adults’ physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs.  In a senior living community such as MorningStar of Sparks, residents find it easy to socialize and meet new friends as well as to engage in a variety of meaningful activities.

Another benefit of senior living is you can leave behind all of the chores required of a homeowner such as mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and other routine, time-consuming chores that can be difficult for seniors.  At MorningStar of Sparks, someone else handles the maintenance while you have the freedom to concentrate on more fulfilling activities.

Many times, older adults have medical conditions that result in them no longer being able or feeling comfortable driving, which is why one of MorningStar’s services includes scheduled transportation.  We also provide routine trips to local shopping malls, entertainment venues, parks, museums and more.

Also don’t worry if you are a senior who values your privacy as your suite is your own personal “nest.”  We just provide a level of comfort knowing help is close at hand when you need it such as if you have a fall or a medical emergency.

Looking for Greater Reno assisted living?  Independent living or memory care?  MorningStar of Sparks invites you to schedule a tour to see for yourself why our residents are proud to call us “home”.  Our community has 128 independent living suites and 80 assisted living suites that include spacious one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.  In addition, we offer 32 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood for the individualized, specialized care of those with memory impairment caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar of Sparks’ mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other Greater Reno assisted living and independent living options. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Do You Suspect It Might be Alzheimer’s?

Have you recently noticed some signs of memory loss or confusion in a parent or another loved one? Are you worried it may be the beginning of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia? We understand this may be a touchy subject to broach with your loved one, which is why experts recommend you do your homework first and learn about the common signs of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that Alzheimer’s can cause changes in cognitive abilities, executive function and behavior. Those afflicted may start having memory problems along with difficulty completing familiar tasks. They may also become confused as to time and place. Other problems involve a marked change in their judgement and trouble with language skills and abstract thinking. Mood swings or changes in personality can also signal Alzheimer’s. All of these are common signs that can point to Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia but only a specialist can make a diagnosis. You should ask your parent’s healthcare provider for a recommendation to a neurologist who will perform test to eliminate other causes for the behavior.

If you are looking for senior living in Santa Fe, we encourage you to take a look at the MorningStar of Santa Fe assisted living and memory care community. Assisted Living at MorningStar of Sparks

MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks offers Sparks and Reno assisted living, independent living, and memory care.  While memory care is all-inclusive, the cost of an assisted living suite is determined by the level of care the resident requires.

MorningStar’s assisted living has five levels and uses a simple point system, which factors into account the cost and time it takes to provide each service.  Whether it involves help with personal daily care activities such as grooming, bathing and toileting, or medical assistance, we come up with a cumulative score that places you within one of our five levels.

Before an assisted living resident even joins our community, our Wellness Director meets with them and their family to go over their medical history and discuss their needs.  From there, we create a care plan approved by the resident that ensures their comfort and safety.  In addition, we offer daily health monitoring and periodically review a resident’s care plan to make sure it is still up-to-date.

We provide dedicated 24-hour Care Managers, a CPR-trained staff member on every shift, and a full-time nurse onsite and on call 24-7.  We also have Certified Medication Care Managers, pharmacy services and much more.  For your safety, each suite has an emergency call system.

Assisted living residents enjoy three delicious daily meals expertly prepared by an Executive Chef and served restaurant style in our lovely dining room.  In addition, a range of convenient services including a full salon offering manicures and pedicures, fitness room, library, and bistro.  For entertainment, residents enjoy our on-site theatre and a full calendar of wellness programs and activities. Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease

While we have all heard a lot about Alzheimer’s and may even know someone suffering from the disease, we may not be aware of the common signs and symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s. Many people think that forgetting things is a sign of Alzheimer’s, while others too readily accept certain symptoms of Alzheimer’s as just getting older.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a website full of useful information and resources for families dealing with the disease and publishes a list of the 10 Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer's. One of the first signs they say is a symptom of Alzheimer’s is not occasional forgetfulness but forgetfulness that disrupts daily life. For example the person is having problems retaining recently learned information and trouble remembering important dates or events, or they are asking the same questions over and over again.

People in the early stages of Alzheimer’s may have more difficulty doing things they used to do easily such as paying bills or following recipes. Even driving to well-known locations or remembering the rules of a favorite game can be troublesome. Other signs include feeling confused about the passage of time and finding it harder and harder to keep track of dates, time and seasons.

Experiencing vision problems such as judging distances and determining color or contrast as well as problems following or partaking in a conversation are also common signs of the disease. Other signs can include changes in personality and mood, and withdrawing from social activities the person used to enjoy.

For the full listing and description of the 10 common signs of Alzheimer’s, please visit the Alzheimer’s Association website. If a loved one has Alzheimer’s, we encourage you to learn more about our Phoenix senior living community, MorningStar at Arcadia. Our community lovingly cares for those in the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

Worried that Assisted Living is Too Expensive?

When it becomes apparent that your parent or another senior loved one needs more care than they are getting at home, you may worry that assisted living is just too expensive. At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we understand the concern but want families to know we can help direct them to often overlooked sources of funding.

However first, we want you to remember that our assisted living community offers a whole new lifestyle. Monthly fees will include the necessities and much more including a fully equipped private suite, daily meals, and transportation services. Additionally each suite includes Cable TV and utilities as well as an emergency call system. We also supply a full range of meaningful wellness programs and fun activities and entertainment.

One of the sources of income we discuss with potential residents and their families includes the generous “Aid & Attendance” Pension issued by the US Department of Veteran Affairs. The monthly benefit pays for assisted living to qualified veterans, as well as their surviving spouse. We will direct you to a local resource that can help ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.

We also remind seniors to take a look at their Long-term Care insurance policies. They can help to protect your personal assets by paying for senior care up to the amounts set forth in the policy. To determine your LTC policy’s coverage, check the Benefits Summary section for specifics on the type of coverage, daily benefit, policy limits and elimination period. Keep in mind premiums may be tax deductible, and benefits from tax-qualified plans are non-taxable, which makes this option even more attractive.

Another source of funding to help with assisted living costs can be to leverage your life insurance policies. Many whole life and universal life policies build a cash reserve through interest-earning excess premiums known as the policy’s “cash value”.

Before taking advantage of any of these funding methods, please consult with a financial advisor. MorningStar of Santa Fe’s team is ready to answer questions regarding pricing and availability of our beautiful assisted living and memory care community

MorningStar at Arcadia Welcomes Pets

At our Phoenix senior living community, we recognize pets offer seniors great companionship with their limitless affection and unconditional love. In fact multiple studies have found pets to be especially beneficial for the elderly and can even help to “reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase social interaction and physical activity.” Pet ownership can combat feelings of loneliness and offer solace from the loss of a spouse or another loved one.

In an article from AgingCare.com entitled, The Healing Power of Pets for Elderly People, several experts weigh-in on the various benefits of pet ownership for seniors including a New Jersey psychotherapist. Dr. Jay P. Granat discusses some of the intangibles pets offer to the elderly such as the fact that “dogs—and other pets—live very much in the here and now.’ He explains that animals do not worry about tomorrow, which can be scary for the elderly and being around an animal with that sense of “now” can rub off on people.

Along with providing companionship to seniors, studies have found that depression is less likely for older adults who own a pet and patients with heart problems can do better when they are responsible for a pet. Psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld, who brings her golden retriever mix to her New York City office, relates how people with memory loss interact with her dog and access memories from long ago. She explains “having a pet helps the senior focus on something other than physical problems and negative preoccupations about loss or aging."

MorningStar at Arcadia knows it is a big decision for seniors to give up their family home and move into senior living. Furthermore it would be very painful to be forced to leave a beloved pet behind, which is why we are proud to be a pet friendly community. Please visit our website to learn about the best assisted living and memory care in Phoenix.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior communities. Tips to Help Make the Transition to Assisted Living Easier

At the MorningStar of Santa Fe assisted living and memory care community, we understand seniors may feel anxious when facing a move into assisted living. Often the decision is necessitated by a sudden change in the person’s ability to continue to live safely at home. Even if the decision is of a more gradual nature, it is still a big change; but there are things family member can do to help make it a smoother transition.

One thing experts agree on is that you need to remember to include your senior loved one in on the plans. This starts with including them in the process of choosing the community - remember it will be their new home. When you forget to ask for their input, it can make them feel as it they are losing their independence. While it is time consuming to visit senior living communities, we suggest you only take your parent with you after you have narrowed the choices down to a couple. Be sure to encourage their opinion and make sure they have an opportunity to ask questions during the community’s tour.

Another thing your loved one will most likely need is help with the moving process. If they are still living in the family home, they will have to do lots of downsizing, which in itself can be stressful. Trying to decide what is important to keep, what to give away to family or friends, and what to donate or sell is not easy. Keep in mind the move to their new home will be smoother if they have familiar furnishings and treasured mementos around them. Also while respecting their feelings, gently remind them their new home may be smaller and they do not want to be overwhelmed with too much “stuff.”

While we finish the last few touches to MorningStar of Santa Fe in preparation for our Opening Celebration, we want area families to know we are here to answer any questions regarding the best senior living in Santa Fe. We invite you to meet our friendly team in the Information Center next door to our construction site or give us a call.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents. Situated on the west side of town, we invite you to give us a call or stop by our onsite Information Center for more details on the finest senior living in Santa Fe.

How to Choose a Walker that Meets Your Needs

Many older adults, especially those in an assisted living home, are no longer as steady on their feet as they used to be. This puts them in danger of a fall, which can have many serious repercussions on a seniors’ health. If you are considering getting a walker to help you move about safely you should know that there are several types which meet different needs.

For starters since there are several kinds of walkers, you should consult with your healthcare provider or physical therapist to assist you to find the most suitable one. They will make sure it is your size as well as the right type. To determine size, you should be able to stand between the rails, and the width of the walker should be level with the insides of your wrists. A professional will also teach you how to use the walker and provide tips for normal activities such as sitting down while using a walker. This is done by backing up until you feel the seat of the chair behind you. Now bend forward at your hip and reach behind with one hand to grab the armrest. Do the same with your other hand as you carefully lower yourself onto the center of the chair.

Common types of walkers include a basic walker that has four legs with rubber tips on each one. To use, a person must pick up the walker as they take a step. A wheeled walker can have two fixed wheels on the front that do not swivel side to side or have rubber tips on the front legs and small wheels on the back. These walkers allow people to walk more naturally as they do not need to be picked up with each step. A three-wheel walker has one wheel in front and two in back and offers the advantage of being lighter and easier to move around in smaller spaces.

Rollators are four-wheeled walkers and can be equipped with a seat and basket. These walkers are equipped with hand brakes and are ideal for people who do not need to apply a lot of weight to the walker. However, they are not recommended for people with dementia as they may forget to use the hand brake.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia offers our residents an exceptional assisted living home.

Seniors’ Most Common Health Problems

Recent statistics indicate we are living longer, and if you do reach the age of 65, you can expect to live on average another 20 years. Furthermore according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 41 percent of those over the age of 65 reports they are in very good or excellent health.

Experts recommend that older adults should be aware of chronic health conditions common to seniors and make lifestyle changes that may help stave off those diseases and improve their quality of life. Some of the things they suggest are to eat a healthy diet, stay physically active, quit smoking and maintain a healthy weight.

If you are already coping with a chronic medical condition, following those suggestions can help you to better manage your disease as well as improve your quality of life. Experts also recommend if you do not already have a geriatrician on your healthcare team, to add one, as they have a special understanding of the things seniors are going through.

The three most prevalent diseases affecting older adults in order are arthritis, heart disease cancer. The CDC estimates arthritis affects almost 50 percent of all adults over the age of 65, and can cause pain and a lower quality of life. While the disease can “discourage you from being active, it’s important to work with your doctor to develop a personalized activity plan that, along with other treatment, can help maintain senior health.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65, and an estimated 37 percent of men and 26 percent of women over 65 are afflicted with chronic heart disease. Doctors say it is important to exercise, eat well, get a good night’s sleep, and maintain a healthy weight in order to stave off heart disease or to better manage it.

Cancer is the next most common disease in seniors and the second leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65. CDC statistics show 28 percent of men and 21 percent of woman over 65 are living with cancer. It is a disease that if caught early, is often treatable so be sure to get routine screening such as colonoscopies, mammograms, and skin checks.

The Many Benefits of Companionship for Seniors

Just because someone is older, it doesn’t mean the need for company, support and love lessens any. Studies have found a consistent social life is particularly important to seniors’ emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. However due to lifestyle changes many seniors experience such as retiring from the workplace, the death of a spouse and/or other close family and friends, and no longer driving, older adults can find themselves socially isolated.

Having a healthy social life alleviates feelings of loneliness as well as helps to reduce the likelihood of depression, which is common among seniors. It also helps to stave off cognitive decline and lessen anxiety.

Seniors with a more robust social life have been found to exercise more, which in itself can lead to better mental as well as physical health by strengthening the heart and immune system. Researchers have found longevity to be another benefit of socialization, and maintaining a healthy social life is believed to improve seniors’ self-esteem and sense of worth.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe assisted living and memory care community, we provide a true home for our residents with a mission of building a “Family for Life.” Our team consists of compassionate, loving individuals who have a felt calling to serve. In addition we offer a wide range of onsite amenities and services to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of our residents. Once we open, our monthly calendar will be loaded with meaningful wellness programs along with fun, entertaining activities. Moreover both assisted living and memory care residents will have the opportunity to participate in scheduled outings and special events.

Making the Assisted Living Decision

At MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Arcadia, we know families often go through a range of emotions once they realize their loved one needs more daily help in order to ensure their comfort and safety. Furthermore, moving into a retirement community, especially assisted living is often precipitated by a major life change, which is why we have put together a commonsense decision guide to help families navigate through the process.

One thing to consider before making any decision is to think about what you are trying to solve, and not just next year, but with an eye to the next 5 to 10 years. Also keep in mind that the concept of “assisted living” is only a few decades old and is intended to feel like a home – not an institution such as nursing homes of old. Today’s assisted living is based on the European model and is a new paradigm in wellness and engagement.

Reading through our decision guide, you will find information on what families should look for in terms of determining whether their loved one needs more help. It talks about safety issues such as recent falls and balance problems, forgetfulness that could lead to a dangerous situation like leaving the stove-top on, and driving mishaps. The guide also cautions families to notice things like weight loss, poor hygiene, and failing eyesight.

Additionally, MorningStar has tips to help you narrow down your choices of assisted living communities. Along with considering location, price, and amenities, one of our most important tips is to take a tour of the community or communities you are most interested in. Beyond the website and all the promotional materials, a tour provides an up close and personal look at the place you or your loved one is considering making their new assisted living home. On our website, we have a convenient link to an online form to set up a tour with us.

Should You Get Genetic Testing for Alzheimer’s Disease?

With more and more research coming to light in terms of genetic links to a variety of diseases including Alzheimer’s, we are faced with the dilemma of whether we want to know about it beforehand.  Dr. Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Neurology Department in New York, says that dealing with the knowledge of an impending disease like Alzheimer’s years before a person is ill may not be productive.  He states that, “While genetic testing predicts risk, it certainly does not diagnose whether dangerous plaques or other symptoms of Alzheimer’s already exist in the brain,” and “implementing prevention measures early-on may be a better option than genetic testing”

So what does genetic testing for Alzheimer’s tell a person?  For one thing, even if the ApoE4 gene is discovered, a person may be at risk for Alzheimer’s but not necessarily develop the disease.  Issues such as inflammation, obesity and other factors may need to be present before the disease can occur.  So if you get a positive result for the ApoE4 gene, it has not taken into account these other factors.

Researchers say a better solution is to focus on tests that can detect the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s.  Right now a test is available but it is very expensive.  The advantage to discovering pre-Alzheimer’s in people still in their 40s or 50 is that early interventions and treatments can be started.

Looking for a Carefree Retirement?

Many older adults are attracted to the idea of carefree retirement years and have found that senior living communities offer the opportunity for a very comfortable lifestyle.   Much of that is due to the fact that senior living communities like MorningStar of Sparks are designed to meet seniors’ social, physical, spiritual and wellness needs.  Senior living communities often include independent living and assisted living as well as memory care that specialize in caring for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.

The physical upkeep involved in owning a home such as mowing lawns, shoveling snow, and other routine chores become harder as we age.  At a senior living community, someone else does the outdoor and indoor maintenance, and communities like MorningStar of Sparks offer housekeeping, laundry and other services.  In other words, senior living residents have the freedom to focus on more fulfilling activities like relaxing and enjoying themselves.

Senior living is also a perfect solution for older adults who live alone and are feeling lonely.  Their world may have gotten smaller as they retired from careers or suffered the loss of a spouse or close friends.  Some seniors no longer feel comfortable driving, which can lead to more isolation.  Senior living offers you privacy but now you have the comfort of knowing that people are around when you need them.  Also you will have the chance to socialize and meet new friends.  At MorningStar of Sparks, we provide scheduled transportation along with outings to places such as entertainment venues, museums, shopping malls, parks and more.

At MorningStar of Sparks, we are committed to providing the best senior living Reno or Sparks has to offer. We have stylish living for independent seniors as well as for those that require a little help each day with personal care activities.  In our Reflections Neighborhood, we devote 32 secure suites to the individualized care for residents with memory impairment.  We offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community and provide a whole range of resort-style amenities and wellness programs.
