The Safest and Best Exercise for Seniors

There have been a number of studies done that document the benefits of walking for older adults, and it is considered by many experts to be the safest and best exercise for the elderly.  Not only can it be performed at a low or moderate intensity and is easy on the joints, but it is also easy to start as it does not require any special equipment.

To get the most benefit out of walking, it is recommended you do it regularly.  The heart-healthy exercise can improve cardiovascular health and has been linked to lower risks of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and strokes.  Furthermore, researchers   have found that “even small amounts of walking each week have been shown to reduce these risks around 15% to 20%.”  Daily walking regimens have “shown a 30% to 50% reduction in participants’ risk of cardiac arrest.”

Other benefits of walking include stopping or decreasing bone mass loss as well as strengthening leg and abdominal muscles, which can improve balance and stability.  Walking can also lead to weight loss or help maintain weight if needed.  Seniors who regularly walk have shown an improvement in their sleep patterns and an increase in mental sharpness.  In addition it assists with joint support by moving the fluid within our joints/cartilage.  It can also help make you feel happier.

At MorningStar of Sparks, we are committed to provide the best senior living Reno or Sparks offers, and we provide seniors plenty of opportunities to stay fit and keep moving.  Our daily calendar includes a variety of physical activities such as Sit and be Fit, Swimming, and Adaptive Seated Yoga.  We also have lots of other activities to engage residents including concerts, crafts, games, movies and much more.  Please visit our website to learn more about Sparks’ best independent living, assisted living and memory care.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Sparks, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to learn more about the finest senior living Reno/Sparks has to offer.

Is it Alzheimer’s Disease? Get a Professional Diagnosis

Experts say it is important to seek the advice of your doctor if memory problems are seriously affecting your life.  To determine if you or a loved one has Alzheimer's disease, the Mayo Clinic explains, “doctors conduct tests to assess memory impairment and other thinking skills, judge functional abilities, and identify behavior changes. They also perform a series of tests to rule out other possible causes of impairment.”

During your appointment, the Mayo Clinic says expect to be evaluated on:

·         Whether you have impaired memory or thinking (cognitive) skills
·         Whether you exhibit changes in personality or behaviors
·         The degree of your memory or thinking impairment or changes
·         How your thinking problems affect your ability to function in daily life
·         The cause of your symptoms

Tests include neuropsychological tests that are used to access your abstract thinking, problem-solving skills, memory, language usage and other related skills.  Your doctor may also schedule braining-imaging tests.  While these brain scans are not used to diagnose Alzheimer’s, they can detect other conditions such as hemorrhages, brain tumors or damage from a past stroke.  They are also used to establish a baseline in terms of the amount of degeneration seen on the scans.

Your doctor may also talk with your family to learn more about the types of changes they have noticed and how they have affected who you are now.  All of the information is then used to rule out other conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, strokes, or depression that may be causing your symptoms.

It is understandable that people are often afraid to go to a doctor once they suspect Alzheimer’s.  Furthermore, many feel that since there is no cure, what is the point?  However, doctors stress once you are diagnosed with the disease, you can start getting the proper treatment as well as consider your care options and plans for the future.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Alzheimer’s Disease Can Result in Feelings of Grief & Loss for the Family

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all. Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold. Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.” They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better. Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors. Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned. You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day. A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so. Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feeling. They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses. Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, our memory care residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. We look forward to bringing incomparable senior living to Santa Fe now that our new community is open. Please visit our website for information on pricing and availability or to set up a tour.

Santa Fe’s Newest Senior Living Community Opens with Pomp & Ceremony

The MorningStar of Santa Fe assisted living and memory care community opened its doors with an Inaugural Reception that included plenty of pomp and ceremony on January 10th. On our website, you will find pictures of the overall festivities as well as special guests and dignitaries that joined the celebration including MorningStar Senior Living’s CEO/Founder, Ken Jaeger. Please flip through the album to get an idea of the love, enthusiasm and pride we all feel for our brand-new, gorgeous senior housing community.

If a parent would benefit from the care and the many amenities and services assisted living offers but are reluctant to make a change in their current situation, please visit MorningStar’s Family Resource link to our helpful “Decision Guide.” We know that while it is a good thing to have the various senior living options available today, it can lead to confusion and our Decision Guide helps to clarify them.

One of the first tips in the guide is to clearly identify what you are trying to solve in terms of your parent’s comfort, wellbeing and safety. We recommend doing this with an eye to not just next year, but to the next 5-10 years. If you are new to the concept of assisted living, it is a relatively new idea that first emerged in the late 1990s, and provides a refreshing change from nursing homes of old that were often institutional and depressing.

For additional help with starting a conversation on senior living, request a copy of “Senior Life: How to have the Best Conversation Ever with Your Elder Parent” from us. It provides a thorough explanation of the relational and psychological constructs of aging and legacy.

Please give us a call or use our online form to set up a tour if you or a loved one requires a little help with daily personal care activities and would benefit from companionship and the stimulation of our wellness programs and activities. Our team looks forward to hearing from you.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents. We encourage you to give us a call for more information on luxury senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Early Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

The Alzheimer’s Association’s website is loaded with the most up-to the-date information regarding all the various aspects of Alzheimer’s disease. Part of their extensive information includes a check list of 10 early warning signs of the disease. This is important to know as an early diagnosis allows someone an opportunity to seek treatment and to make plans for the future. While everyone’s journey is different, they recommend if you or a loved one is exhibiting signs of memory loss, to consult with a doctor.

The first sign of Alzheimer’s as stated by the Association is memory loss that disrupts a person’s daily life. This is the most common sign of Alzheimer’s, especially in the early stages. Examples include forgetting important dates or events as well as recently learned information.

The second sign is experiencing difficulties in developing a plan or working with numbers. It may affect everyday tasks such as balancing a checkbook or keeping track of monthly bills.

Next they cite new problems that develop in completing familiar tasks around the home, at work or leisure. The person experiences difficulties when driving to a familiar location, managing a budget or remembering the rules of a favorite game.

Fourth on the Alzheimer’s Association’s list is signs of confusion regarding time and place. Examples include losing track of dates and what time of the year it is as well as forgetting where they are or how they got there.

Another sign of Alzheimer’s is problems understanding visual images and spatial relationships. This can mean difficulty reading, judging distances and determining color or contrast. Further along in the disease, a person may not recognize their own reflection.

The sixth sign on their list includes experiencing new problems with words when speaking or writing. Another sign is misplacing things and not having the ability to retrace their steps. People suffering from Alzheimer’s disease may put things in unusual places.

The eighth sign includes decreased or poor judgment such as giving away large amounts of money to fraudulent causes or paying less attention to grooming habits. The ninth sign stated by the Association is withdrawing from work or social activities. Last on the list is a significant change in mood and personality. People with the disease can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. Please see the Alzheimer’s Association’s website for the complete details on the early warning signs of the disease.

MorningStar of Albuquerque’s goal is to provide the best senior living in the area, and our community includes 21 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment. The Benefits of Senior Independent Living Communities

MorningStar of Sparks is committed to providing the best senior living Reno or Sparks offers and we invite you to take a closer look at the many benefits of moving into an independent living community. While some seniors feel strongly about remaining in their homes after retirement, other seniors are very happy to have discovered the advantages of community living.

To start with, for many seniors the family home starts to feel pretty empty once the kids have moved out.  In addition you are still stuck with all of the upkeep and maintenance of the home including snow removal, lawn care and the costs of repairs and replacement.  Senior living on the other hand, means no more concerns about maintenance inside or out.

An independent living community also offers the security of predictable budgeting, which allows you to know just what your monthly expenses will be as most are included in your monthly fee.  It also solves another problem many seniors face - loneliness.  As we age, older adults can have difficulty getting out and about, and may be at risk for losing their social ties and more likely to develop health problems that come with loneliness.  An independent living community offers the advantage of a private apartment and the chance to socialize whenever you choose with built-in companionship.

Independent living communities such as MorningStar of Sparks provide residents with activities and programming that ensure you are never bored.  Whether you want to attend an exercise class, play cards or a board game, get a haircut, or catch a movie, independent living gives you the chance to do it all on-site.

Moreover it is typically less stressful for seniors to make the transition to independent living before they “need” to move into assisted living.  Selling your home and moving can be stressful and it is much easier to do while you are still able and healthy.

Please visit our website for more information regarding our independent living, assisted living and memory care.  We feel privileged to provide seniors with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

Preparing for Your Doctor’s Appointment

Most of us have walked out of our doctor’s office and quickly thought of a question we wished we had asked the doctor. We know that doctors are busy and our time with them is short, but the medical profession says it is important for seniors to proactively communicate with their health care providers and control the appointment.

They recommend putting together a list of questions you want to ask before your next visit. This can help to give you a better understanding of your medical conditions and improve your ability to self-manage them. You should also bring a list of all of the prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and vitamins and supplements you are currently taking.

General questions to ask include:

  • Are my medications still appropriate to my condition and should the dosage be lowered or increased?
  • How are my blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels?
  • What type of exercise do you recommend for someone my age?
  • Is my weight a problem?
  • What steps should I take to improve my health?

If you are experiencing symptoms, make a list of all of them and include frequency and the amount of pain or discomfort associated with them. If your doctor diagnoses a disease, ask them how do you spell it and if you will need any tests or medications to treat it? In addition ask your doctor how the condition will affect your long-term health, and what, if any, are the side effects of the medications.

Too many seniors are reluctant to ask questions of their health care providers but it is important to become educated about your medical conditions, treatments and possible health risks. In fact, most doctors say they wish their patients would be more proactive and ask questions during their visit as it lets them know you understand your health conditions.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia offers our residents an exceptional assisted living home.

The Affordability of Assisted Living Communities

As families try to figure out how make sure their parent or another elderly relative gets the proper care, many shy away from the option of assisted living as they think it is too expensive.  However, the opposite may be true.  Assisted living can actually be less expensive than the costs of trying to cobble together the care your parent needs.

For instance, if your parent lives alone, their cost-of-living includes yearly taxes as well as a mortgage or rental payment and expenses incurred with routine maintenance and repairs.  They are also responsible for utility bills that continue to rise each year while their income may not be.

Your parent may also be paying for in-home care that cannot only be costly but may not be entirely adequate to ensure their safety 24/7.  Furthermore, if the home requires modifications to accommodate their limited mobility, these changes are typically expensive.  Also, the modifications may result in a lower selling price once you do sell the home.

If your parent lives by themselves, they may be lonely and feel isolated especially if they no longer drive.  The website, aPlaceforMom.com, states that, “seniors who live alone often experience social isolation and poor nutrition which contributes to cognitive decline, health problems, depression and a lower quality of life.”  They may additionally require assistance to get to doctor appointments, to run errands or buy groceries, prepare meals, etc.

Many folks who tour an assisted living community initially experience sticker shock when they learn the cost of assisted living, but according to the experts, it actually is a great value.  The aPlaceforMom site has a chart that shows once you add up all of the services and amenities included in the cost; it may actually be less than half the cost of getting care for your elderly parent at home.

If you are looking at Greater Reno assisted living communities, we encourage you to visit MorningStar of Sparks’ website to learn more about our comfortable, loving community.  When you are there, take a look at our photo gallery, amenities, and our well-designed floorplans.  Please use our online form or give us a call to set up a tour.

Looking for Senior Living in Phoenix?

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Arcadia is dedicated to provide the best senior living Phoenix has to offer, and we help area families to ensure their loved one gets the care they need. On our website, you will find a variety of resources that offer answers to many of the questions seniors and their families have in regard to assisted living communities.

Did you know that after all of the services and amenities provided to MorningStar’s assisted living residents are factored into the cost, our community is typically less expensive than trying to cobble together the same level of care at home? However, we understand that for some seniors, the cost may be an obstacle. If it is something you and your family are struggling with, we encourage you to read through our Affordability guide on our website for recommendations to help make it more affordable.

We want you to know there are a wide array of financial solutions available beyond the retirement savings and investments you have built up through the years. In addition to these traditional ways of financing senior living, we discuss some innovative financial, and often under-used, benefits.

One such benefit is long-term care insurance, which may be used to help pay for senior care that is not covered by Medicare. We advise that you read through your policy’s Benefits Summary to see what is eligible. MorningStar does not accept Medicaid.

Another source of often untapped income is to leverage your life insurance policies. Whole life and universal life policies build a reserve of cash through interest-earning excess premiums (known as the policy’s “cash value”). Before you cash in a policy, we recommend seeking the advice of a financial consultant as there may be tax consequences.

Please take a look at all of our suggestions online. Also we are happy to sit down with you and discuss financial options or any other questions you may have. MorningStar at Arcadia has 80 bright suites for assisted living and 30 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar at Arcadia represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. MorningStar at Arcadia Offers Unparalleled Assisted Living

Are you looking for an assisted living home? In case you wondered, not all communities are alike. At MorningStar at Arcadia, our care philosophy evolved from a unique and loving concept. MorningStar Senior Living began when Ken Jaeger, our founder, set out to establish his own brand of exceptional senior living.

Ken’s dream was to start a senior housing company that was defined by the human touch. He explains how he “wanted to re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.” From this distinct beginning, MorningStar was founded on the following three mission statements:

  • Honor God in our business practices and relationships — a commitment to strong moral values and ethics
  • Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals — a commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence
  • Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well — a commitment to hiring and retaining employees who use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve residents

We back up our mission statement with a set of core values that include Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness. These values guide us in day-to-day life as well as in the way we dispense care to each resident. Along with our mission to serve seniors, we support local causes such as the Alzheimer’s Association as well as other global issues.

So what does all this mean for our assisted living and memory care residents? MorningStar at Arcadia is dedicated to providing compassionate, loving care that enhances our residents’ lives. We are proud to have a team of individuals with a felt calling to serve, and who consider seniors to be heroes. Each staff member is the type of person who does the right things even when no one is watching and willingly goes the extra mile to assist our residents. Please visit our website to learn about pricing and availability or to set up a tour to see why our community is so special.

Seniors Can Benefit from Strength Training

Think you are too old to pump iron?  Research shows that for the majority of seniors who still do exercise, their regimen only includes aerobic exercises such as walking, biking, jogging or swimming.  While these types of exercises are important to our overall health, a recent article published by the U.S. News & World Report explains why seniors can benefit from strength training.  They state that fitness professionals as well as healthcare providers report everyone from 18 to 80 needs to do both cardiovascular and strengthening exercises.

Recent research suggests that the benefits go beyond just building better tone and an improved shape as studies link “not just aerobic exercise but strength training with a reduced risk of death from all causes.”  This is why the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends that even older adults follow their guidelines and do some level of strength training at least two days a week.  As Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, an associate professor of medicine, pediatrics and public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine points out “ very good evidence [is available] to show that 80-year-olds are just as able to improve their muscle mass as 50-year-olds. And this can be done reliably over a very short period of time – something as short as two to three months."

At MorningStar of Sparks, our goal is to provide the best senior living Reno or Sparks offers, and we take our residents wellbeing very seriously.  We have range of wellness programs and activities that support and engage our residents including physical activities and a fitness room.  One look at our monthly calendar and you will see a variety of exercise classes available along with many other entertaining and meaningful programs.
