Daily Exercise Offers Long Term Health Benefits

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we recognize that daily exercise is essential to the wellbeing of our residents. Research backs up that claim as the National Institute of Health (NIA) explains that seniors who stay physically active and regularly exercise receive long-term health benefits. They state that, “it can even improve the health for some older people who already have diseases and disabilities.”

Taking part in physical activities such as walking your dog, using the stairs, or gardening as well as regular formal exercises such as weight training, tai chi, or aerobics classes are both beneficial to seniors. Studies have found an increase in mental capacity and a slower mental decline in older adults who stay physically active as it can help to increase blood flow to all parts of the body including the brain. The NIA also states that exercise may delay or prevent diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and colon cancer, and help to reduce death and hospitalization rates.

In addition physical activities and exercises may help to improve healing in seniors, provide better balance and reduce falls, and enhance their overall quality of life. Furthermore, the research finds that it is never too late to start exercising to receive the benefits.

Another thing to remember is that you do not need to have full mobility to start exercising as there are many exercises designed to overcome individual limitations. Activities should include modified stretching exercises to increase flexibility, cardiovascular exercises to raise the heart rate and increase endurance, and weight training to build muscle and bone mass and improve balance.

A few examples of Morningstar at Arcadia’s activities include our group exercise classes as well as chair yoga, chair volleyball, a walking club, fitness room, and other special activities. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about our Phoenix senior living community. In total we have 80 assisted living suites, and 30 secure suites for residents with dementia-related diseases.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior communities. Committed to creating a true home for residents within a gorgeous setting, our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve. Assisted Living for Your Parent May be More Affordable than You Think

As seniors get to the point in their lives where they need daily help in order to live comfortably and safely, many families worry that assisted living will cost more than they can afford.  The reality according to A Place for Mom is that assisted living may actually be less expensive than the cost of cobbling together everything you need to support your parent.  They state that after “dealing with the initial sticker shock and touring a community most families change their minds and realize assisted living is a great value.”

You may be asking yourself how this can be true.  To start with, if your parent is living alone in the family home, they have on-going expenses such as mortgage payments or yearly taxes and insurance as well as routine maintenance and repair costs.  If your parent is renting, costs continue to rise each year with increases in rent and utility bills.

In addition many elderly adults no longer feel comfortable driving and are not getting out like they used to, which can lead to feelings of isolation.  Studies show seniors who live alone often “experience social isolation and poor nutrition which contributes to cognitive decline, health problems, depression and a lower quality of life.”  Furthermore, if they are unable to drive, they will require assistance with getting to and from doctor appointments, running errands and buying groceries.

Another expense you may encounter when your parent is living in their own house is it may require modifications to allow them to move safely about the home.  These types of changes can be expensive, and when it comes time to sell, may impact the worth of the home.

The bottom line is that after you add up all of the services and amenities included in the cost of assisted living, A Place for Mom concludes it may actually be less than half the cost of getting care for your elderly parent at home.

MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks is dedicated to providing the finest independent and assisted living Reno and the surrounding area offers.  We have 80 beautiful suites for assisted living along with our independent living and memory care options. Please visit our website to check on pricing and availability as well as to set up a tour.

Pets Can Enhance a Senior’s Life

It turns out that being a pet owner can provide a range of benefits to seniors including helping them to live longer, healthier and more enjoyable lives. One clinical study done several years ago tracked heart disease survivors after they were discharged from the hospital. Studying survivors’ medical histories, lifestyles, families, and relationships, it found that, "The presence of a pet was the strongest social predictor of survival...not just for lonely or depressed people, but everyone - independent of marital status and access to social support from human beings."

Another study done by the American Psychological Association found pets provide an important source of social support to their elderly owners. Researchers explain that senior pet owners “fared better on several well-being (e.g., greater self-esteem, more exercise) and individual-difference (e.g., greater conscientiousness, less fearful attachment) measures.”

It may be the benefits come from the fact that pets offer unconditional affection and companionship. Also a pet requires seniors to stay engaged in the day-to-day process of caring for the animal as they need to feed, groom, walk and clean up after their pet.

If you are thinking of getting a pet for an elderly family member, it is recommended that you consider the person’s physical health and personality. AgingCare.com says you should also take into account the following: has the person owned a pet before; does the animal have a good temperament; and will owning a pet cause a financial hardship?

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we understand that our residents do not want to leave behind their pet when they decide to move into an assisted living community, which is why we welcome pets. Please give us a call to learn more about our pet guidelines as well as to check on pricing to learn more about suite configurations and floorplans. We are scheduled to open by the end of the year.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents. Situated on the west side of town, we invite you to give us a call or stop by our onsite Information Center for more details about the finest assisted living in Santa Fe, NM.

Senior Living in Phoenix is More Affordable than You Thought

Do you have a loved one who needs a little assistance on a daily basis but you have shied away from senior living as you thought it was too expensive? As one of the finest senior living communities Phoenix offers, MorningStar at Arcadia invites you to take a more in-depth look at senior living and to consider all of the advantages and benefits it offers to residents.

It may be you have heard about the monthly cost of assisted living from friends or acquaintances and thought it was more than you or your parent could handle. While that may be true, have you factored in the real costs of a community such as MorningStar at Arcadia as compared to mom or dad living in their own home? Keep in mind that MorningStar’s monthly suite rental includes the resident’s meals along with a whole range of services and amenities such as scheduled transportation, housekeeping, and laundry services.

If your parent is still maintaining a home, their expenses now include property taxes, home insurance, utilities, home maintenance and repairs. Also you may have the costs of home care providers coming in to help your parent as well as paying for someone to take them to doctor appointments, run errands and buy groceries. They may even need someone to prepare meals for them. This doesn’t even include the costs of retrofitting a home to accommodate your parent’s lack of mobility such as the need to provide a ramp to their home and widening doors and hallways to accommodate a wheelchair.

At MorningStar the monthly suite rental also includes a 24-hour care staff and an emergency call service along with a range of wellness and leisure activities, health monitoring, and much more. Our residents are treated to three daily meals and snacks prepared by our Executive Chef and designed to be tasty as well as nutritional. Please see our website to learn more about our exceptional community.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia is one of the finest senior living communities Phoenix has to offer.

A Wide Range of Services at MorningStar of Albuquerque

Are you asking yourself “Can I find quality senior living near me?” Look no further than MorningStar of Albuquerque. Conveniently located on the popular northeast side of town, we offer wonderful mountain views with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and medical facilities. Our beautiful community offers residents a safe and comfortable home to age in place while taking advantage of resort-style amenities and a broad range of meaningful activities.

While MorningStar of Albuquerque is proud to provide high-quality assisted living and memory care for seniors, we also provide our families with some lesser known services. One example is our Companion Living option that is designed for two unrelated people of the same sex to share an assisted living or memory care suite.

This is an ideal solution for those wishing to share expenses as the rent of the suite is split between the two residents as well as a way to build a lasting friendship. Even if you do not have someone in mind to share a suite, we will help you find a roommate and go to great lengths to match you with an individual who has common interests and similar background.

A roommate can also help to ease your transition to senior living. You and your roommate can look out for one another, and as you are familiar with each another’s habits and personalities, may be the first person to notice changes in health and abilities. Shared lives can help to boost health through improved sleeping patterns and an increased appetite. When you take advantage of companion living, you are still offered all of the personalized care and first-class amenities extended to our other residents.

We also feel privileged to have veterans as part of our community and when we hear of vets who are interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to the local resources that can expertly handle their application process for “Aid & Attendance.” This is monthly benefit payment extended through the V.A. to certain wartime Veterans (and their survivors) with financial need and physician orders for regular assistance with the activities of daily living.

Please visit our website to learn more about these and our other programs designed to serve our seniors. Offering the finest senior living in the area, MorningStar of Albuquerque is committed to giving our residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Albuquerque, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Even as a Senior You Need to Maintain a Healthy Diet

Regardless of your age it is important to have a nutrient-rich diet in order to stay as healthy as possible. Even for people in their 70s, 80s and 90s, eating well can make a difference in how they feel; but unfortunately, many seniors do not always know what constitutes a healthy diet.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) provides some helpful tips for older adults to follow to ensure they eat well. One of the first things they say is to make sure to stay hydrated because as we age, we lose some of our sense of thirst. They recommend drinking plenty of water and avoiding beverages with lots of added sugars.

Seniors’ diets should include fruits and vegetables in a variety of different colors, lentils and beans, nuts and seeds, whole grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy, and lean protein. While vegetables and fruits are a good source of fiber, full of vitamins, and low-calorie, they can be difficult to chew for some elderly people with dental problems. If that is a problem, substitute softer foods including canned fruits and meats such as tuna. Also adding herbs or spices to food is a good way to enhance flavor.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, our residents are treated to three daily meals prepared largely from scratch using the freshest produce by our Executive Chef. We also incorporate BrainWise foods into our meals such as nuts, berries, dark leafy vegetables, and dark chocolate. In addition we recognize that mealtime is more enjoyable in a social setting, which is why our meals are served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room. Recipes are modified to accommodate changing needs and diets including low-sodium, sugar-free, vegetarian, and low fat choices. Please visit our website or our onsite Information Center to learn more.

Help Prevent Falls with Balance Exercises

A fall can have serious consequences especially for an older adult.  The National Council on Aging cites statistics showing “one in four Americans 65 years or older falls each year, every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.”  They add that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.

Loss of balance in seniors can be caused from many things including inner ear problems such as vertigo, failing eyesight, numbness in feet and legs, arthritis, chronic diseases (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and multiple sclerosis), medications and heart problems.  A condition called orthostatic hypotension, which is a drop in blood pressure, can also result in feelings of dizziness, light headedness, or feeling faint and lead to falls.

To keep your muscles strong and help prevent falls, you need to keep moving, and the best way to improve mobility and balance is through training exercises.  Participating in twice-weekly programs for aerobic, balance, flexibility and resistance/strength training can increase your ability to walk and allow you to continue exercising more over the long term.

You can also lessen your risk of falling by practicing balance-training exercises throughout the day.  One example is to place your hand on the kitchen counter and balance on one foot and then the other, then if you feel comfortable, remove your hand and try again.  Another at-home exercise is to stand behind a sturdy chair and grip it for balance while lifting one leg directly behind you without bending your knee or pointing your toes, then switch to the other leg.  You can also do side leg raises in much the same way but extend your leg to the side keeping your back straight, and your toes pointing forward.

Our Remarkable Leadership Team Sets the Standard for Excellence!

As MorningStar of Santa Fe gets ready for our Grand Opening later this year, we would like to introduce our exceptional leadership team. Since we believe that the tone of our community comes from the top down, we could not be any prouder to have on board two very special individuals who will set the bar for extraordinary and be examples for the rest of our team members.

We are an organization founded on the core values of: Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness; and have a leadership team that embodies them. As Executive Director, Bill Bouvier’s childhood was influenced by his grandma, an Italian immigrant who worked hard to assimilate into her new American culture. She taught Bill the importance of good table manners, good grammar and to look your best at every occasion. Bill cherishes the many lessons he has learned from seniors including taking time to enjoy life and feels it is his calling to serve them. In his role as Executive Director, Bill will advocate for our residents’ needs.

Leslie Castaneda will serve as MorningStar of Santa Fe’s Director of Community Relations. She has lots of experience working with seniors and recalls that her grandmother “Minnie” was the first senior she ever loved. Leslie credits Minnie with shaping her into the woman she is today by giving her unconditional love that allowed individuality. Minnie always urged Leslie to chase her dreams and she feels like she has done that by working for a company whose “overall mission, values and integrity aligns with my own, especially when working with our seniors.”

Making the Move into Assisted Living?

Now that the hard decision is over and you or a parent has decided that moving into assisted living makes the most sense for your/their needs, you may need to downsize a houseful of furniture and decades of belongings. While this can seem like an overwhelming task, take a deep breath, try to relax and read some tips from organizing experts.

Organizing your approach to the task should be your first step and begin by cataloging a list of your furniture and possessions. Now create lists for the things you want to keep, items you want to give to family or friends, and items to sell. Anything left over should go on a list to donate.

Before you get too far ahead of yourself, you will also need to remember that your apartment in the assisted living community may be smaller than your present home. This means you will not need a whole household full of furniture!

It may be helpful to measure the size of the suite and create a floor plan to give yourself a realistic idea of how your furnishings will fit in your new place. If the unit is a studio or a smaller, one bedroom, you do not want to be so crowded you cannot safely move around. You may even want to buy a smaller couch or coffee table that is better suited to the size of your new home. Also bins and shelving help keep items organized and easy to get to.

Furthermore keep in mind that your new life at an assisted living community will be much easier as you will no longer be responsible for preparing meals and maintaining a home. At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we cook and serve the meals as well as provide light housekeeping, daily trash removal, and laundry and linen services.

MorningStar of Santa Fe provides residents with a home that is both beautiful and accommodating. We offer 56 assisted living suites in a variety of configurations including spacious studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom floorplans (some as large as 820 square feet). Reflections Neighborhood has 29 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents. Searching for an Assisted Living Community in Phoenix?

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we understand there are all sorts of emotions that occur when a family begins to look into assisted living for a parent or a loved one. Often it is a complete learning experience as many people do not know what assisted living offers and how it differs from a nursing home.

Assisted living is a fairly new concept that started in the late 1990’s and is designed for seniors who want to maintain their independence but need a little help with daily living activities. Based on the European social model, it creates a new paradigm in wellness and engagement, and we believe that the structure and society offered in assisted living communities introduces a return of healthy routines and healthier lives.

It is estimated that approximately one million Americans are living in senior care communities and that number is expected to almost double by 2030 as people are living longer. Most assisted living residents move into a community from their own home, family residence or an apartment while others move in after a hospital or rehabilitation stay.

Our recommendation for opening a conversation about making some changes in the way your parent is living should be done when everyone is gathered and relaxed. Also remember nothing has to be decided on all at once, and while it should ultimately be a family decision, the person involved needs to be given a voice.

We also understand that searching for the most suitable community is difficult as there are many factors to consider. We suggest that once you narrow down several choices, you set up tours to experience the communities firsthand. The child of the person or healthier spouse should do the tours, and not more than two a day, as there is a lot of information to take in.

Assisted living communities like MorningStar at Arcadia are designed to allow seniors’ their independence and give them the opportunity to stay socially active. We have put together a “Conversation Guide” available on our website that goes into even greater depth regarding helping families to make the transition. Please contact us to set up a tour to see firsthand the finest senior living Phoenix offers.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia invites you to drop in or give us a call to learn more about the best senior living Phoenix has to offer.

Assisted Living Explained

The American Healthcare Association defines assisted living as “part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”  So rather than taking away the independence of seniors assisted living actually helps residents to maintain their independence while giving them the care they need to live comfortably and safely.

Also, please remember assisted living is not a nursing home.  It is a community designed to meets the needs and preferences of the residents and to give them their dignity, autonomy, privacy, independence, choice and safety.  While each community has its own personality, assisted living typically addresses the needs of its residents with 24-hour care services, daily meals and wellness activities.   In fact, it is often more cost effective not to mention more convenient than employing a group of home health care providers.
