Independent and Assisted Living – What’s the Difference?

Often families are confused with the terms “independent living” and “assisted living” and are not sure which one is best suited for their needs.  To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe senior living communities that are designed specifically for seniors who want to and are able to live without any help.  Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy, but require a little assistance in their daily lives.

Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle.  While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, day trips and meals.  Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with mowing lawns, shoveling snow and other routine chores that need to be done when owning a home.

At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24 hour supervision.  Generally a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family.  Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Albuquerque offers 48 well-appointed assisted living suites with the choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  Set on the popular northeast side of town, MorningStar of Albuquerque has wonderful mountain views and is conveniently located near banks, churches, medical care, shopping, and restaurants.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Albuquerque, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Hot Weather Can be Dangerous for Seniors

Now that spring is upon us it is important for seniors to remember to take precautions as outdoor temperatures begin to heat up.  A study from the University of Chicago Medical Center reports extremely hot weather can be dangerous for the elderly and that approximately 40% of heat-related fatalities in the U.S. are in people over the age of 65.  Another publication from the Alzheimer’s Association explains why seniors 65 and older are more at risk for heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke than younger people.

One of the reasons stated is that as we age the body does not adjust as well to sudden temperature changes as it did when we were younger.  This can be caused by heart or blood vessel problems, under-active sweat glands and normal age-related changes in the skin.  Another factor is that many elderly people suffer from chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung, or kidney diseases that can affect normal body responses to heat.

Also prescription drugs including diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and some heart and high blood pressure medicines can impair the body’s ability to regulate its temperature and inhibit perspiration.  Other problems that can make seniors more susceptible to heat-related stress are being overweight and drinking alcoholic beverages.

To avoid the dangers of heat-related illnesses, experts advise seniors to drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages throughout the day, and to stay away from extremely cold beverages as they can cause cramps.  They also recommend if possible to remain indoors during the heat of the day and do not engage in strenuous activities.  If you feel too warm, take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath, dress in lightweight clothing and get into an air conditioned environment.

MorningStar’s New Community Offers Loving Memory Care

Opening in the Fall of 2018, MorningStar of Santa Fe’s philosophy and approach to memory care will include our guiding principle that: whatever the extent of the memory loss, whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains.  We feel it our calling as well as our privilege to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

Our individualized care starts by meeting with the senior and their family members to learn all we can about the person’s background including their vocation, talents and preferences.  Taking this information, we put together a daily routine that will be used to stimulate or calm the resident in response to their mood or the surrounding circumstances.  Throughout the senior’s stay with us, we also engage the family members as we know our services are as much for them as for the residing senior.

MorningStar’s memory care provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being, while at the same time, encourages and supports choice and independence whenever possible.  Our residents participate in daily recreational and purposeful activities that include life skills, art, music, and exercise and are included in special events and scheduled outings.

The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to permit residents the freedom to move about in spacious surroundings and include an enclosed courtyard that is reserved just for their use.  Our extensive services include around-the-clock care, daily health monitoring, a licensed nurse and a caring and devoted staff.

MorningStar is honored to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in every market we serve.  Our team members work to support their local chapter by donating their time, talent and treasure.  Please visit our website for contact information as well as to learn more about the area’s newest assisted living and memory care community.

We Take Dining to the Next Level

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we proudly take dining to a new level with beautifully prepared meals served restaurant-style.  We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why we put so much emphasis on ensuring our food service is A+.

Furthermore we believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other and is one of the great joys of living, especially when enjoyed within a community setting.  When we break bread together, it is much more than just physical nutrients as it helps to bonds us as a family and as friends.

To ensure our food service is both delicious and nutritional, we have our own highly-trained professional chef who is in charge of all meal prep.  Residents enjoy seasonal menus that are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest of ingredients of which come from high-quality producers and/or are locally sourced.  Meals are also modified to include an array of low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat choices so that residents can self-manage any dietary restrictions.

Recognizing that nutrient-rich foods can help stimulate the appetite as well as support brain health, MorningStar at Arcadia meals are also prepared using ingredients with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.   These “super foods” include leafy, dark greens; dark chocolate; acai; berries, and Omega 3 fats.  Most importantly mealtime at Arcadia is a time for residents to relax and enjoy the company of fellow residents or family and friends.

We Take Our Memory Care Residents’ Nutritional Needs Seriously

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that many people suffering from Alzheimer’s may be “overwhelmed with too many food choices, forget to eat or have difficulty with eating utensils.”   This can be a problem as we know healthy eating is especially important for those with dementia and that poor nutrition can result in weight loss and increase behavioral symptoms.

This is why in addition to the many aspects of MorningStar of Sparks’ memory care; we take our residents’ nutritional concerns very seriously.  One of the things we do to encourage our tender memory care residents to eat is to make dining as much about Community as it is about nutrition.  At mealtime, team members sit with residents to help make meal time an enjoyable, shared experience.  We also regularly serve meals family-style on platters and serving bowls to prompt residents to connect with memories of meals they have eaten or prepared during their lives.  Family members are invited to join us at any time.

e also present food on long appetizer-style plates with separate cups and bowls for individual items.  The plates are often in a variety of colors to increase the visual and mental appeal of the meal.

In our Reflections Neighborhood at MorningStar of Sparks our team is extremely experienced in caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we know it is important to serve foods that taste as good as they look.  Furthermore, we understand some residents’ abilities at the table may be compromised, which is why we also serve finger foods; mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids; and easy-to-recognize balanced meals.  If the best option for your loved one is to eat pureed meat and vegetables, we offer elegant dishes that are both beautifully plated and purely delicious.

Please visit our website to learn more about our loving memory care as well as our independent and assisted living options.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Sparks, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Seniors are Healthier When Socially Connected

There are many studies that suggest seniors are healthier when they stay socially connected and feel engaged with life.  Researchers have found that older people without such connections are more apt to “experience greater numbers of chronic and life-limiting health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.”  In a 2010 article published by the New England Journal of Medicine, it reports that social interactions can also protect seniors’ cognitive skills.

As seniors age, it often becomes harder to stay connected to the community and many older adults end up living fairly isolated from the outside world.  A number of factors contribute to the problem including health issues that limit mobility, no longer driving, and the loss of a spouse and other family members and friends.

Furthermore, good nutrition can be a problem for seniors living alone as it may be difficult for them to prepare meals or to even buy groceries.  Some seniors have even been found to be suffering from malnutrition.  Physical safety can also be a problem as the elderly are more prone to falls due to common medical conditions that effect balance and physical strength including diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.  In addition seniors living alone may not be as quick to recognize a health issue needs immediate medical attention.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, opening in the fall of 2018, participating in a range of activities is just a way of life as we will offer a full calendar of fun and stimulating activities every day.  Our residents will enjoy nutritional daily meals served restaurant style that offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy both the meal and to socially interact with others.  We will also provide scheduled transportation for residents along with special outings to local places of interest and entertainment. Residents also have the assurance that our 24-hour care staff is always available to help if the need arises.

Living alone can be difficult for seniors and even affect their overall lifespan.  We encourage you to contact MorningStar of Santa Fe and learn more about the services and amenities that we provide for our residents.

Dementia Film Series at All Four Phoenix MorningStars

MorningStar at Arcadia’s  comprehensive memory care includes not only providing the best care for our Reflections Neighborhood residents but also includes extending our care to their families.   We know that Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can be extremely difficult for everyone involved, which is why we strive to help our families better understand and cope with the disease.

At all of our MorningStar properties, we partner with the Alzheimer’s Association and help raise fund and awareness of the disease through participation in their annually sponsored activities.  Additionally over the next couple of months, we will be hosting MorningStar’s Dementia Film Series, which is designed to pull back the curtain and provide a deeper understanding of the disease.

Our community is one of four MorningStar properties in the Phoenix area that is simulcasting  the series, which is hosted by Melissa Dillon, our Director of Programing and Dementia Care.  Our first film was the Glen Campbell: I’ll BE Me documentary.  The poignant film chronicles the country music icon's remarkable career, his 2011 Alzheimer's diagnosis, final tour and and his farewell to fans.  If you did not get the chance to see it with us, we recommend you look for it elsewhere as it both moving and enlightening.

On Thursday, May 24th we will feature the film Still Alice, a 2014 independent drama based on Lisa Genova's 2007 bestselling novel of the same name.  The film stars Julianne Moore as Alice Howland, a linguistics professor diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease who struggles to stay connected to who she was as she starts losing words and hence her identity to Alzheimer's.  The movie is one hour and forty minitues long.

The last film in the series is 60 Minutes: Alzheimer’s in the Family.  The TV presentation  examines a  Medellin, Colombia family that may provide crucial clues in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.  The large, extended family has many members afflicted with a rare genetic mutation that causes early onset Alzheimer's.

Each event starts at 10 AM with the film first, then a Q & A session, followed by lunch.   As space is limited, we ask that you RSVP to MorningStar at Arcadia.  Also if you are interested, please contact us to set up a tour of our beautiful assisted living and memory care community.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve.  Set in a warm, loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia invites you to schedule a tour or give us a call to learn more about the best Phoenix area assisted living community.

MorningStar of Santa Fe Offers Assisted Living at Its Finest

When searching for senior living options, many people are not entirely sure what the term “assisted living” means.  We will try and clarify.  One of the first things to know is assisted living is not just another word for a nursing home.  Nor does it offer the same level of care and typically is not as expensive.

So, what is assisted living?  Assisted living is designed for seniors who want to retain their independence but require some assistance with daily personal care activities.   While not all assisted living communities are the same in terms of the level of care, typically assisted living provides services for activities like bathing and dressing as well as prepared meals.

At assisted living communities such as Santa Fe, New Mexico’s new MorningStar of Santa Fe, we create individualized care plans for each resident after talking with them and their family. Furthermore, during the course of your stay, your care plan will be regularly reviewed to ensure it addresses your needs.  Also, regardless of the level of care, all residents receive the assurance of having 24/7 onsite Care Managers who help to ensure their safety and meet their every need.

As a resident of MorningStar, you will get three daily meals that are meticulously prepared largely from scratch by our Executive Chef.  Each meal is both nutritional and delicious and we modify recipes to address a number of different dietary restrictions including low sodium or low fat, sugar-free, no sugar, and vegetarian options.

In addition, our assisted living residents will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities and programs that are designed to promote physical, intellectual and spiritual wellness.   Please visit our website for contact information to learn more about MorningStar of Santa Fe’s gorgeous new community.
