Assisted Living Provides Help with Daily Living

Many people mistakenly assume that “assisted living” is just another term for nursing homes.  In fact, nursing homes are intended for people that require long-term, around-the-clock medical care and supervision and should not be confused with assisted living, which provides residents support for daily care activities.  At an assisted living community, you will receive the care you need to live comfortably and safely while still retaining your privacy and as much independence as possible.

Assisted living is ideal for anyone who does not require 24-hour skilled medical care but rather just needs more personal care than they can get at home or at an independent living retirement community.  Meals and transportation are provided, and if needed, residents can get help with activities such as showering dressing, and etc.  For the family, they rest easy knowing that a trained, caring staff is available to help whenever a loved one needs it.

Many assisted living communities offer the privacy of individual suites, while also providing their residents with the security and safety of 24-hour support and quick access to care.  In addition communities generally provide residents the opportunity to participate in social and recreation activities along with wellness programs.  Residents usually eat their meals in a communal dining room and have housekeeping and laundry services available.

If assisted living is right for you or a loved one, we encourage you to take a look at the beautiful new MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Santa Fe.   Opening in the fall of 2018, our community will provide various levels of assistance with daily living activities as determined after a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director and in agreement with the senior and their extended family.  For all of our residents, MorningStar’s around-the-clock Care Managers will be there to meet needs and to ensure the utmost safety.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Situated on the west side of town, we invite you to drop in to our Information Center or give us a call to learn more about our exceptional community.

Best Memory Care in Phoenix

Along with our 80 assisted living suites, MorningStar at Arcadia has 30 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the individualized care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Regardless of whether your loved one is at the onset of the disease or well into the more advanced stages, we can care for them.

MorningStar’s approach to dementia care starts with the utmost professionalism and respect for the individual and works toward replacing medications with alternative natural therapies including patience, attention and love whenever possible.  Our specially-trained care managers use gentle, resident-directed methods to calm and awaken memories and to support each resident’s capabilities.  Common techniques include using multi-sensory cues such as aromatherapy as well as a range of meaningful and purposeful activities that incorporate art, music, and life skills.

Our personalized approach to memory care also means we make a point to get to know each resident including their background, vocation, talents and preferences.  Once we feel we truly know the “person”, we can then effectively setup a daily routine that is designed around stimulating or calming the resident.  In addition it allows us to quickly adjust their routine in response to a particular mood or situation.  At MorningStar at Arcadia, we also understand that physical exercise is important to an individual’s overall well-being so every day residents have the opportunity to strengthen and stretch their bodies.

You will find our Reflections Neighborhood is uniquely designed to address all the various needs of our residents.  We offer security and comfort with a choice of studio, one bedroom or two-bedroom suites as well as two enclosed patios for memory care residents.  Furthermore, MorningStar at Arcadia has a 24-hour care staff, full-time licensed nurse, regular health monitoring, and is a pet friendly community.  We also offer meal assistance with our nutritional, Executive Chef prepared meals.

Contact us to schedule a visit to experience our community firsthand.  We know you will be gratified to discover a staff that is committed to providing compassionate and loving care to our special residents each and every day.

One good place for general information is at our Family Resources section that offers a whole range of answers to FAQs.  It is here you will find that MorningStar was founded in 2003 in Denver and that we are not just a family of senior living communities, but of senior loving homes.  We consider our residents the heroes and recognize it is our “privilege to serve and our pleasure to love all beneath our roof.”  And while we are rooted in Judeo-Christian beliefs, we welcome all faiths in our residents and team members.

Other questions that get answered include information about our age requirements.  It is 62 years or older for our independent suites, assisted living and memory care.  And in case you wondered, of course couples are welcome and a suite can also be shared by friends who enjoy one another’s company.

While pricing is discussed, we encourage you to contact us for more precise information.  As a general overview, our apartment suites’ monthly rental fee is based on square footage, location within the building and views.  If your family member will be in an assisted living suite, we offer five levels of care that are established after a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director.  Medical and non-medical auxiliary services are priced a la carte.   Memory care is all-inclusive and residents are charged one package price.  Please see our website to learn more about MorningStar of Sparks and for contact information.

Looking for an Assisted Living Community?

Searching for an assisted living community for yourself or a parent can feel like an overwhelming task.  We know you want to make the best choice and there are a couple of things you may want to consider before you take such an important step.

First, you will want to research the various options in your preferred area.  The Internet is an efficient and easy way to discover what is out there, and you will find several websites that offer a search directory of communities.  Also you can check with your health care provider for any recommendations they may have.

Once you have narrowed down your list to several communities in your target location, give them a call to set up a tour.  While on the phone, have a list of questions handy such as are there immediate openings available, and if not, how long is the wait, the price range and what will you see on the tour as well as how much time it will take.

A community tour is your best opportunity to get a real feel for the place.  You want your future home to have a caring and warm staff and residents that are friendly.  If you are looking for assisted living for a family member that is not very mobile, you can tour a few and narrow down the selections so they only tour the top choices.  The Caring.com website has a checklist available for researching and touring a community that you may find helpful.

Opening this fall, MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Santa Fe will provide an atmosphere of comfort, wellness and community. In addition to the 56 well-appointed, private assisted living suites, our community will be filled with inviting common areas both inside and out.  In our Reflections Neighborhood we will devote 29 suites to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment.  Please give us a call or stop by the Information Center so we can help you find your new home.

Easy Exercises to Keep Your Brain Active as You Age

As we grow older, we now know it is as important to keep our brains active as it is to stay physically active.  Studies show that we not only lose muscle mass as we age but our brains actually begin to shrink.  An article from Everyday Health Media’s website explains that, “your brain's cognitive reserve — its ability to withstand neurological damage due to aging and other factors without showing visible signs of slowing or memory loss — diminishes through the years.”

Brain exercises such as word games and jigsaw puzzles as well as playing an instrument or learning a foreign language can all help to increase our brain’s cognitive reserves.  Hand-eye activities that require fine-motor skills such as knitting, drawing and painting are also helpful.  Learning to cook a new cuisine is a tasty way to keep our brains healthy since cooking involves different parts of our brains including taste, smell, sight and touch.

Another tip from the website is to get in the habit of sharpening your recall skills.  This can be as simple as writing down a list of things you need to buy from the store, memorize it, and then an hour later try to remember as many things as you can from it.  They also recommend you try to do math problems in your head, and for a further challenge do it while walking.

At MorningStar of Sparks, we provide an environment that encourages both physical and mental activities.  One look at our monthly calendar, from our Painting Group, to Team Trivia, to Swimming, and you will see it is loaded with wellness programs and entertaining activities that are fun and stimulating.  In fact if we do not already offer an activity a resident would like, we help them to start one.  Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Sparks, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself our exceptional offering for independent and assisted living in Reno, NV.
