Accurate Medical Information is Key to Good Health

The Medical News Today cites recent surveys showing Americans are vulnerable to misinformation via social and mass market media as well as from friends and family. As this can include critical medical information, they warn while there is a fount of easily accessible content, there are things we can do to protect ourselves from inaccurate advice.

According to a 2024 survey from Healthline, more than half of American respondents said they got health information via social media, while another 32% said they turned to family, friends, and colleagues for health advice. To help empower us to make good medical decisions, Medical News Today spoke with Dawn Holford, PhD from the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol, U.K. who specializes in the psychology of communication and decision-making.

Holford suggests people double check information with more than one reliable source to look for consensus across the board. She also adamantly says it is up to medical news websites like Medical News Today to be extra diligent to ensure their information is correct. In terms of the consumer, she recommends using trusted governmental public health organizations as well as global ones like the World Health Organization. In addition, look for well-vetted independent sites and reach out to trusted healthcare providers.

Following her rule of thumb, Holford cautions to be on your guard. She explains, “If something seems to align to what you already believe — it may well be correct, but follow the same steps to verify it.”

Practicing Gratitude Can Enhance Both Mental and Physical Well-Being

Many of us have felt the world is a scary place at one time or another, but studies show the simple practice of gratitude can go a long way toward helping us feel happier and less anxious. In fact, experts say it is linked to mental and physical health benefits like feeling more optimistic and hopeful as well as strengthening relationships, boosting immunity, lowering blood pressure, improving sleep and decreasing the risk of depression.

However, just like other healthy habits; the practice of gratitude takes a conscious effort. Experts say to receive the full benefits; it should not be saved only for special occasions but rather practiced every day.

To begin, we need to understand exactly what “gratitude” is. Erin Wiley, M.A., L.P.C.C., a licensed clinical psychotherapist and executive director of The Willow Center, explains that gratitude is “a positive state of mind evoked by focusing on and appreciating the good in one’s life.” By adopting a positive state of mind, we can concentrate on the good things as well as deal with negative events that come into our lives in a more fruitful way.

A helpful suggestion for getting into the habit of feeling more grateful includes using a journal daily to express your gratitude. In the same way, vocalizing feelings of gratitude gives them power and can help to override negative feelings. Also, spread your feelings of gratitude toward others in your life. Actions such as volunteering are yet another way to feel gratitude.

At MorningStar, we provide exceptional assisted living in Albuquerque, NM designed to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle that allows seniors to live life to the fullest. A Close Relationship Benefits Both Children and Grandparents

To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, “Grandparents Day” is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provides a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren. If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

Protect Your Medicare Number to Help Prevent Fraud

The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association estimates last year’s annual Medicare insurance fraud was around $100 billion, and most likely much higher. While one in five beneficiaries say they have encountered potential Medicare fraud, there are precautions you can take to reduce or eliminate fraudulent claims starting with protecting your Medicare and Social Security cards and numbers like you do your credit cards.

Experts say don’t respond to a call, text or email asking you to provide your Medicare Number. They caution you to only show your Medicare card or give out your number to your doctor or people you know who should have it. To determine if you are a victim of fraud, examine your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully for any discrepancies or additions of services or charges you did not receive. Another common scam is to try to get Medicare beneficiaries to sign up for drug plans that are not approved by Medicare.

If your Medicare card is stolen or you suspect fraud, report it as soon as possible to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). It is important to know Medicare will never call to sell you anything or visit you at home. They will only call or contact you in limited situations to ask for personal information. One such person may be the agent who helped you sign up for a particular Medicare program or drug plan. You also may be contacted by Medicare if you left your number to report fraud or inconsistencies with your MSNs.

If you are looking for exceptional memory care or assisted living in Albuquerque, NM, MorningStar may be your answer. We offer a true home where seniors can live their best life and feel respected, engaged and secure. Recommended Activities for Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and help enrich their life. A study reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities are important to the person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, senior living our Reflections Neighborhood offers compassionate, experienced memory care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. A Good Night’s Sleep is Important for Older Adults

Experts say it is a myth that older adults do not need as much sleep as they did when they were younger. Studies show at least seven hours a night of sleep is critical to brain health and cognitive health. If you consistently wake up several times during the night and still wake up early every day, it may be time to make changes to your nightly routine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports due to sleep disturbances that frequently come with age, many seniors get less REM sleep. REM is an important cycle in our sleep and includes the period in which we dream. It is also believed to help consolidate memory. In addition, during our deep sleep cycle, the brain purges toxins and waste products including amyloid beta, which can gradually clump together to form amyloid plaques, found in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.

A chronic lack of sleep can affect a person’s mood. The magazine, Frontiers in Physiology, published a report citing 6 studies showing less than 7 hours of sleep a night in older adults was linked to a higher risk for depression. Psychological Medicine reports on another study of adults who were on average age 72 who frequently said they woke during the night. It found participants were more likely to report a depressed mood.

The Mayo Clinic has a few tips to help you sleep through the night such as going to bed and getting up around the same time each day. They caution about going to sleep hungry or very full and to eat at least a few hours before bedtime. Also, watch your consummation of alcohol, nicotine and caffeine products a couple of hours before bedtime. Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet, and refrain from viewing light-emitting screens right before sleep. They say it is important to manage your stress levels and to try and get some exercise each day.
